Apple has launched a new battery replacement program for older MacBook Pros (2016 and 2017) for batteries that don’t charge past 1%. This replacement program will be completely free and customers will have to contact official Apple support to claim it.
You can either bring in your machine to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider or give Apple a call for guidance. However, keep in mind that the company is facing high demand so you may not be able to receive service right away.
According to Apple, the aforementioned battery issue is affecting “a very small number of customers”. If you happen to be one of the unlucky MacBook Pro owners, you will see a “Service Recommended” message when checking the battery health status. Apple says that if the battery status is “Normal”, then the battery is not affected by the issue.
Once you contact Apple support, the company will examine your laptop to verify if it is eligible for the free battery replacement program or not.
Earlier this week, the company also released the macOS update 11.2.1 called Big Sur that aimed to fix charging issues with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros. Apple recommends updating to this patch to minimize battery issues or the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 supplemental update.
