At the worldwide developer conference, Apple announced that a change is coming to iOS 13 which will affect WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Starting from September, iOS 13 will no longer allow VOIP services to run in the background. Apple says that this will make the iPhones more secure and improve their performance.
Both Messenger and WhatsApp work by running Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services in the background. This helps them connect to calls faster, however, at the same time these services are used to collect data and, as a result, drain the battery.
WhatsApp will be affected the most by this change, as it uses VOIP to enable the end to end encryption.
Moreover, Facebook-based applications are not the only iOS apps using VOIP services for background operations. If they want to keep their apps running in the background, they might have to make some changes too.
Even though the update will roll out in September this year, the developers will have until April next year to comply with Apple’s new regulations.
In the wake of this situation, Facebook says,
The changes to the upcoming iOS releases are not insignificant, but we are in conversations with Apple on how best to address. To be clear—we are using the PushKit VoIP API to deliver a world-class, private messaging experience, not for the purpose of collecting data.
Some say this is Apple’s way to limit Facebook Messenger in order to push its own iMessage forward. In any case, we’ll have wait and see how Facebook deals with this change.
