Coronavirus vaccine registration for citizens aged 50 or more will start in 10 days, Federal Planning Minister, Asad Umar, has confirmed.

While speaking with a local news channel, the Planning Minister urged all citizens age 60 or above to get themselves registered for the vaccination as they belong to an age group that has disproportionately been affected by the Coronavirus.

The Minister added that the vaccination campaign for citizens above 60 years of age had started earlier this month while the immunization drive for frontline healthcare workers had begun last month after receiving 0.5 million doses of Sinopharm doses from China.

Moreover, Asad Umar, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), refuted reports which claimed that Pakistan does not intend to procure COVID-19 vaccines due to financial restrictions.

The minister reiterated that the purchase of Coronavirus vaccines will not stop due to monetary constraints as the federal government had earmarked $150 million budget for the procurement of vaccines.

Besides, the Planning Minister said that the third wave of Coronavirus outbreak has started in Pakistan and the UK variant of the disease is the reason behind the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, adding that the situation in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is rapidly deteriorating.

In this regard, the NCOC has considered recommending the respective provincial governments to impose a complete lockdown in both provinces to curb the resurging Coronavirus.

NCOC also recommended relevant authorities of both provincial governments to ensure complete compliance with the directives including mandatory use of face masks.

Pakistan has reported more than 2,000 cases of Coronavirus every day since 10 March. During the last 24 hours, 2,253 cases and 29 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported. Overall, Pakistan has reported 607,453 cases and 13,537 deaths due to Coronavirus since February 2019.
