The Drug Regulatory Authority (DRAP) has notified a 22 to 35 percent increase in the prices of 253 medicines. This is the second upward revision in medicine prices in less than a month.

The DRAP notification did not include the names of the medicines.

President Pakistan Drug Lawyers Forum (PDLF), Noor Mohammad Mahar, claimed that notification was originally issued on October 5 but was made public earlier this week.

PDLF President rejected the government’s decision and urged it to retract the notification.

Earlier on September 24, the federal government had approved the price hike for 94 life-saving drugs to ‘ensure their availability in the market.’

Commenting on the development, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, had said that the recent hike was ‘inevitable’ to ensure their uninterrupted supply of the medicines.

He supported the DRAP’s decision and called it a ‘reasonable increase.’ Dr. Sultan said that pharmaceutical companies stop producing essential medicines if prices are not increasing, which creates a shortage across the country.

He said that the increase in prices was approved to avoid a shortage of life-saving drugs.
