The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for conducting the Senate Elections.
The polls will be held on 3 March to elect 48 senators of which 11 will be from Punjab and Sindh each, 12 from KP and Balochistan each, and two from Islamabad. Seven members will be elected on general seats and one poll on a minority seat will be conducted in KP and Balochistan each.

The last date for filing nomination papers is 13 February while the last date to file for appeal against acceptance or rejection of papers is 18 February.
Following this, the revised list of candidates will be issued on 21 February.
ECP will confirm if there is any change in the voting mode as President Arif Alvi recently signed the Elections (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 which has laid the foundation for conducting Senate elections through an “open and identifiable ballot”.

According to the details, amendments have been made to Sections 81, 122, and 185 of the Elections Act, 2017.
The Ordinance is effective immediately and “extends to the whole of Pakistan”, however it has been made subject to a pending opinion by the Supreme Court
The Ordinance read, “Provided that in case the Supreme Court of Pakistan gives an opinion in Reference No. 1 of 2021 filed under Article 186 of the Constitution, that elections for the members of the Senate do not fall within the purview of Article 226 of the Constitution, the poll for elections for members of the Senate to be held in March 2021 and thereafter shall be conducted by the Commission through open and identifiable ballot”.
