With more and more businesses moving to online stores during the Pandemic, Social media giant Facebook has decided to make a major new push into e-commerce. Starting today, users will be able to browse and buy products directly from a business’ Facebook Page or Instagram profile.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, via a long Facebook post, just announced the launch of Facebook Shops. Although both Facebook and Instagram already support a degree of e-commerce with Facebook Libra currency initiative and Instagram featured products and posts, this new tool is another step in the same direction. It is designed to enable businesses to create a full-fledged Facebook Shop.
Zuckerberg writes:
Shops are native and fast, which means no more app-switching to a slow mobile web browser where you have to reenter your credit card when you tap on an interesting product you see in feeds.
The post further details that Facebook shops will be powered by third-party services, including Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Channel Advisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube, and Feedonomics. The company is trying to make sure “small businesses can easily integrate into a strong, open ecosystem of tools.”
This will help them manage customer journey end-to-end. The businesses will have complete control over the level of integration they want.
Moreover, Facebook is working on rolling out a bunch of features to endorse this new decision. According to Zuckerberg:
We’re building a dedicated shopping tab on Instagram and a destination inside Explore where you can find and buy products you might be interested in. Soon, we’ll also be launching new Live shopping features across Facebook and Instagram, which will allow you to shop on Live in real-time.
With the pandemic’s economic fallout, many small- and large-scale businesses have been hurt. Hence, online sales have been a saving grace for them in the last couple of months. Facebook shops will certainly create significant new business opportunities for the companies as well as Facebook itself.
