The federal government has successfully increased the number of tax return filers to 2.1 million, the highest in the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) history.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, announced this in a tweet on Sunday.

Taking on the micro-blogging website, the minister said that FBR’s projected target is to increase the number of returns to 4 million by the end of the current tax year.

“So far 2.1 million people have filed their tax returns, which is the highest in FBR’s history. FBR has projected a target to enhance these returns numbers to 4m for the tax year 2019.”

The development has come days after Chairman FBR, Shabbar Zaidi, extended the date for filing returns to August 2.

In a press release on July 14, the FBR chief had urged the non-filers to submit their returns before the extended deadline to avoid difficulties.

He quoted the Income Tax Ordinance to maintain that anyone who owns a house larger than 500 square yards or a vehicle over 1000 cc is bound to file tax returns.

“Under the Clause 181 AA of The Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the commercial and industrial gas and electricity consumers are required to become part of the Active Taxpayers List (ATL),” Zaidi had said.
