Gaming smartphones are popular these days. The top gaming phone brands are Xiaomi’s Blackshark, Asus ROG Phone, Razr Phone, and lately even standard mid-rangers such as the Redmi Note 8 Pro have been joining in as well.
For that reason, Google is developing a Game Device Certification Program to make sure that these devices are powerful enough and “behave in a predictable way” for game developers.
Folks over at XDA Developers managed to obtain a copy of the most recent version of Google’s GMS requirements for OEMs/ODMs. These documents detail the requirements that smartphone manufacturers need to fulfill before they can install GMS (Google Mobile Services) on their devices.
These requirements must be met before a manufacturer can declare that their device has received game device certification.
Some of the requirements are “must provide a modern, up-to-date high-performance GPU and display APIs, and enable reasonable frame introspection.” Another requirement is that the gaming phone should allow apps to allocate at least 2.3 GB of memory before they’re killed by the system.
Judging by a recent job listing from Google, the company seems to have already set up a team for this task. One of the job titles is “Developer Relations Manager for Android Game Device Certification”.
This team will be responsible for working with game developers to understand their needs, working with manufacturers and vendors and with the Android Certification team, as well as managing the game certification itself.
There are currently no devices that have received the new certification as Google hasn’t officially unveiled the program. Once it does become official, it is expected that Google will also release a list of certified devices that will be updated periodically.
