Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the more premium models in the highly anticipated Mate 30 series. The phone features a 6.5-inch OLED display with extreme curves around the sides, which Huawei calls “The Horizon Display”.
To make it work, Huawei replaced physical buttons with pressure-sensitive pads on the side which work with haptic feedback and a sliding mechanism. This obviously raises concerns about unwanted touches as you hold the phone in your hand. Huawei VP Li Xiaolong thinks it won’t be a problem.
He explains that the display is divided into three areas – the flat screen in the middle and two bends around the sides of the phone. The touches from the sides are ignored when you are holding the phone and the screen will work like a typical flat panel most of the time.
The curved sides of the display only register your touch for the volume buttons, shoulder buttons for gaming, and a shutter key for the camera.
To prevent unwanted touches, the volume control only works when you double-tap on either side of the screen. Huawei’s Product Manager Bruce Lee believes that users will find it convenient and will quickly get used to it.
The video below shows how it works:
