Facebook has been struggling to create a separate messaging feature for Instagram. Previously, the social media giant started working on an ‘Instagram Direct’ application which was abandoned in its beta phase. However, the company is trying to create something similar again.

Facebook is reportedly working on a new application called ‘Threads’ and it looks like another attempt by Facebook to edge in on Snapchat’s turf.

According to The Verge, the new app will invite users to share their location, and battery life with a list of close friends, previously introduced for Instagram stories. Apart from this, other creative tools from Instagram and the typical text, photo, and video messages will also be available.

It will also have a manual status sharing option, where the uploaded status will appear on the main feed along with messages. This main feed will be called the ‘central feed’ where all the messages from the user’s friends will appear with a green dot next to the active user’s profile, similar to what we see on the Facebook messenger’s main page.

Facebook is reportedly planning and testing the app internally, there’s no official release date for it. We don’t know if it will actually be successful either. Facebook needs to make this more than a messaging app as the market already has several similar apps.
