Firefighters in Karachi are on a strike since Wednesday, 16th October, after non-payment of monthly salary and fire risk allowance.

Officials of the Firefighter Welfare Organization say firefighters will not allow any fire-tender to leave the premises of fire stations until all their demands are met.

Firefighters are determined not to come to the fire stations in case of any incident, sparking fear among the citizens of Karachi.

Firefighter Welfare Organization claims the government has not paid last month’s salaries to the firefighters. Moreover, firefighters are yet to receive the payment of fire risk allowance for the last 17 months.

Employees are not only demanding the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances but also an increase in their salaries along with the provision of the necessary equipment to deal with high-intensity flames.

Chief Fire Officer Tehsin Siddiqui has termed the strike unreasonable. He also claimed that the firefighters will resume normal duties in case of any incident.

Mayor of Karachi, Waseem Akhtar, has held several meetings with firefighters to resolve the issue but to no avail.
