The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication is trying to set up a regulatory authority to improve the standard of education and skills development in local universities to meet international standards.

This was stated by Minister of IT and Telecommunication, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui while he was addressing the media on the inaugural ceremony of the 19th ITCN Asia 2019.

Pakistan’s universities produce around IT 25,000 graduates but merely 5,000 of them get employed at leading local IT companies. The other graduates do not meet the selection criteria of the companies because of their irrelevant or outdated education.

There is a huge gap between the required skills of professionals in Pakistan and what they learn at different universities. This needs to be addressed to bring them in line with the global standards, he added.

Once Pakistan’s graduates meet the global standards, the IT industry will witness a massive change in a few years, particularly in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, he remarked.

Pakistan will not only improve its exports to different countries, which isn’t comparable with our neighboring countries these days, but it will also expedite the process of digitization in the governance system.

E-Payment Gateway To Be Launched Soon

The government will launch its electronic payment gateway in Pakistan soon which will enhance exports of the IT industry.

The unavailability of an accessible payment solution is the biggest impediment in improving exports of the IT industry. Concerned authorities have been working consistently to develop an indigenous electronic payment gateway for Pakistan.

The minister hopes that IT exports will grow manifold with the introduction of an e-payment gateway in Pakistan, as the industry has a lot of potential in various emerging fields.

The present government wants to digitize various industry sectors in Pakistan, Dr. Siddiqui said. In this regard, the ministry has announced the launch of IT Cities and IT Parks in the city which already contribute to 65 percent of the revenue generated in Pakistan but receive very little from it.

The minister said that ITCN Asia has been held for 19 years in Pakistan, which shows the growing potential of the IT industry in Pakistan and its bright future.
