The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a hike in electricity tariffs for three state-owned power distribution companies (DISCOs).

The increased tariff applies to three power supply companies in Multan, Gujranwala, and Sukkur. If approved by the federal government, it will collect additional revenue of Rs. 916 billion.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NEPRA said that the move was aimed at implementing a uniform tariff in the country.

After the surge, the average tariff for the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) will be Rs. 16.88 per unit for 2018-19 and Rs. 16.52 per unit for 2019-20 to collect Rs. 555 billion from Multan consumers.

Similarly, the NEPRA has approved a power tariff for the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) at Rs. 15.14 per unit for 2018-19 and Rs .15.69 per unit for 2019-20. The move will put an additional burden of Rs. 334 billion on Gujranwala consumers.

Moreover, Rs. 16 billion will be collected from the consumers of the Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) under the distribution tariff. The additional tariff will be added to the consumers’ bills from January 2021 onwards.

Earlier on 14 December, the power regulator approved a hike of Rs. 1.11 per unit in electricity rates due to the variations in fuel charges for September 2020 and put a cumulative burden of Rs.12 billion on consumers.
