On Thursday, Twitter released its 15th biannual Transparency Report. The report states that there has been a decline in the number of twitter accounts reported by the Pakistani Government. In the first 6 months of 2019, the number of reported twitter accounts fell by 40%.

From January to June 2019, the Pakistani government reported 1,798 twitter accounts compared to Twitter. 3,004 twitter profiles during the same period last year.

Regarding requests for removal of objectionable content, the Pakistani government reported 273 posts to Twitter. It is the highest number of content removal requests made by the Pakistani government ever. Twitter did not entertain any requests for the removal of objectionable content made through official channels. The number of removal requests stood at 243 during the same period last year.

From January to June 2019, the Pakistani government sought information about 70 twitter profiles through 23 information requests made to Twitter. During the same period last year, information of 54 accounts was requested through 22 information requests sent to Twitter.

Responding to the 15th biannual Twitter Transparency Report, Prime Minister’s focal person on digital media, Arslan Khalid, said that the Pakistani government only reports hate speech and blasphemous content through Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

When asked about the low compliance rate of Twitter, Arslan clarified that Twitter is a US-based company and Pakistani laws do not apply to it. Soon, legislation will be brought into the Parliament to ensure Twitter complies with all the requests made by the Pakistani government, Arslan added.
