Karachi Police has informed the judicial magistrate that they weren’t able to arrest the higher officials of K-Electric.
A local court had ordered the arrest of top K-Electric officials in relation to more than two dozen deaths caused by electrocution. The deaths occurred over the past couple of weeks in Karachi after monsoon rains flooded the streets.
The top management of K-electric was mentioned in an FIR.
However, the police sought another 14 days from the court to arrest KE owner Arif Naqvi, Chairman Ikram Sehgal, Chief Executive Officer Moonis Abdullah Alvi, and others named in the case.
Note that the police had previously shown reluctance in registering the case against the company but did it on immense public pressure.
On August 18th hearing, the police party had also requested the court declare the case A-Class and close it.
National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had, on the other hand, launched an independent inquiry into the matter and found K-Electric responsible for criminal negligence and recommend necessary action.
While briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Power, the NEPRA chairman said that deaths due to electrocution and heatwave were not acceptable.
Monis Alvi, the K-Electric CEO, whom Karachi police have failed to arrest, also appeared before the committee on Wednesday.
He informed the Senate committee that 15 out of 33 people died in their homes during the monsoon season, while 11 died due to electric poles and street lights.
We are waiting for the NEPRA report, and it would be implemented in letter and spirit.
