According to a new study published in the JCI Insight journal, regular intake of water suppresses the hormones that are linked to obesity and diabetes.
Dr. Miguel Lanaspa, a researcher at the University of Colorado, Denver, stated, “The clinical significance of this work is that it may encourage studies to evaluate whether simple increases in water intake may effectively mitigate obesity and metabolic syndrome.”

According to the research, Dr. Lanaspa and his team of researchers wanted to determine why vasopressin, a hormone that maintains the body’s water level, caused obesity and diabetes.
To understand the issue at the micro-level, they fed mice sugar water and found that it stimulated their brains to make vasopressin. The hormone prompts body function to retain water as fat, which causes dehydration and triggers obesity.
Another experiment led to the conclusion that plain water given to mice reduced obesity in them.
Dr. Lanaspa explained, “We found that it does this by working through a particular vasopressin receptor known as V1b. This receptor has been known for a while but no one has really understood its function. We found that mice lacking V1b were completely protected from the effects of sugar. Our research shows that the administration of water can suppress vasopressin, and both prevent and treat obesity.”
The research also revealed that dehydration is a massive stimulant for fat formation.
Dr. Richard Johnson from the same research team said, “This explains why vasopressin is so high in desert mammals as they do not have easy access to water. So vasopressin conserves water by storing it as fat.”

As per research data, obese people often show signs of dehydration, which explains why salty diets may also cause obesity and diabetes.
The researchers found that water therapy in mice effectively curbed the effects of nominal obesity, and Dr. Lanaspa suggested that ‘the best way to block vasopressin is to drink water’.
The research concluded that drinking plain water and cutting back on the intake of salt help reduce the probability of obesity and other metabolic syndromes.
