A number of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) employees working at the Jinnah International Airport have tested positive for COVID-19.

This development came a few days after the PCAA announced strict COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for its employees which included mandatory face masks, social distancing, and other important health guidelines.

The infected employees have been sent on medical leaves and are currently in self-isolation for 14 days. Their duties have been assigned to other employees.

Last week, authorities sealed the PCAA Hyderabad Training Institute after the detection of 27 coronavirus cases.

The second wave of the novel coronavirus has hit the country hard. On Thursday, Pakistan registered 34 deaths and 1,808 infections within the past 24 hours despite the government-imposed smart lockdowns in 4,136 residential areas countrywide.

With these measures failing to curb the spread, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) has recommended several restrictive measures to the government. This includes closing down shrines, cinemas, theaters, indoor hotels, restaurants, marriage halls, public gatherings of more than 500 persons, and reducing business hours. The forum has also recommended an early and extended national winter break.

A decision regarding the proposed measures is expected on Monday.
