Sindh government is planning on adding solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) filtration plants to all government schools across the province.
A water commission created by the Supreme Court has devised an initial plan for installing these plants. Being solar-powered, these plants will be able to work without burdening the national grid. This is helpful for far-flung regions in Sindh where electricity supply is not possible.
In the first phase, the commission aims to install 4,000 RO plants in various government schools and health facilities.
Public Health Engineering Department Secretary Roshan Ali Shaikh told a local newspaper that the PC-1 for this program had been completed.
We have decided to allocate Rs. 2 billion to the first phase of this plan and will release Rs. 500 million in the current fiscal year.
He said that the installation of water purifier plants would convert the muddy raw water supply into clean drinkable water for residents of the area.
The public health engineering department has reportedly asked Sindh government’s health and education sectors to identify the schools and hospitals facing a water crisis.
Residents of many remote areas like Thar have to travel far and wide to fetch water. The initiative will help such regions in coping with their water problems, he said.
