Sindh government has decided to pay Rs. 100,000 annually for the next 30 years as compensation to over 500 households affected by the Gorano Dam near Thar coal power project of Islamkot in district Tharparker.
It was finalized during a meeting held over the weekend presided over by the Minister for Energy, Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh.

For the unfamiliar, Gorano Dam’s man-made reservoir built in a depression in the Thar Desert which collects water after mining for coal through a 35-km long pipeline had submerged 1,500 acres of land, disrupting the livelihoods of over 500 families.
The Sindh government’s compensation package is apparently a cruel joke considering the fact that Gorano Dam’s victims will receive little over Rs.8,000 monthly for the next three decades in return for losing their land that had been their only source of income for centuries.
