Featuring in an Ashes game is nerve-wracking as it is but for Steve Smith, it was an even more difficult task as he returned to his first Test match after his ban. With the Barmy Army chanting ‘cheat, cheat, cheat’, Smith focused on what he does best: succeed when others would fail.
Putting all the noise of the crowd aside, Smith scored one of the finest knocks in Test cricket history. His fighting knock of 144 runs gave Australia a much-needed lifeline after being 122 for 8 at one stage.
In the second innings, Smith walked out in a much better position and was supported by Travis Head and Matthew Wade, which helped him reach his 25th Test match hundred. He was eventually caught behind at 142 off Chris Woakes.
His phenomenal efforts helped him create history, which has only been achieved by a handful of players.
