Yesterday, Elon Musk showcased Tesla’s new “Cybertruck” pickup truck but it didn’t go exactly as planned when the truck’s windows were smashed while trying to show how tough it is to break them.
When the demonstration went wrong, Musk remarked, “Room for improvement.”
The truck was introduced in Hawthorne, California amidst cheers and bemusement over its stainless steel and its angular design.
Jessica Caldwell from the vehicle marketplace Edmunds said, “People probably won’t get past the looks of it” She further added, “It looks like a truck version of the DeLorean from Back To The Future.”
The pickup market represents an opportunity for the company as it seeks to enhance its battery technology that could allow transporting heavier loads over large distances. According to the company, the Cybertruck can cover 500 miles on a single charge.
The Cybertruck has a starting price of $39,900, the base model has a range of 402km and the top-of-the-line one has a price-tag of $69,900, and can cover 500 miles in a single charge. According to Tesla, it has a seating capacity of 6 and can haul a payload of 3,500lbs.
Musk announced that pre-orders are open and the production will start in late 2021.
The window smash happened during the part of the presentation where Musk was showcasing the truck’s stainless steel exterior and metal windows that could supposedly endure bullets and sledgehammers. Contrary to Tesla’s claims, when Franz von Holzhausen Tesla’s head of design, threw a metal ball at the left side windows they broke.
Musk watching the embarrassing moment said, “It didn’t go through, that’s a plus side,” and added, “We threw wrenches, we threw the kitchen sink at the glass and it didn’t break. For some reason, it broke now… I don’t know why.”
