At least 15 British-Pakistani politicians have emerged victorious in the United Kingdom’s recently concluded elections, including Conservative Party’s Sajid Javid.

Sajid, who served as the Finance Minister in Boris Johnson’s cabinet, has not only retained his seat but also increased his votes by 6,533 votes. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Bromsgrove.

The other Pakistan-born successful candidates from the winning Conservative Party include Rehman Chishti, who was elected for the fourth consecutive term from his hometown, Gillingham; Saqib Bhatti from Meriden, Nusrat Ghani from Wealden, and Imran Ahmed from Bedfordshire.

A majority of British politicians with Pakistani background were supporting the runner-up Labour Party. Those who got elected on Labour Party’s tickets are:

• Naz Shah with third consecutive victory from Bradford West
• Khalid Mahmood with a second straight win from Birmingham MP
• Yasmin Qureshi from Bolton South East
• Imran Hussain from Bradford East
• Zara Sultana from Coventry South
• Tahir Ali from Birmingham Hall Green
• Shabana Mahmood from Birmingham Ladywood
• Rozina Ali from Tooting
• Muhammad Yaseen from Bedfordshire
• Afzal Khan from Manchester’s Gorton

Over 70 British-Pakistanis were contesting elections on Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrats parties’ tickets, while some of them participated in the elections as independent candidates.

The results announced early on Friday saw previous UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party securing a landslide victory. The party won 368 seats in the 650-seat parliament, their biggest-ever win since Margaret Thatcher’s 1987 triumph.

Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party stood second with 203 seats, followed by Scottish National Party (48) and Liberal Democrats (11).
