Former fast bowler, Aaqib Javed, has claimed that the current crop of Pakistan players lacks leadership skills, and their ‘slave mentality’ is hurting Pakistan cricket. Javed said that during his playing days, every player used to take responsibility and played fearless cricket, which made them successful.

Javed, who was part of the 1992 World Cup-winning squad, said that the Pakistan cricket team used to play with passion and aggression, which led them to put in exceptional performances on the pitch and win titles for their country. He said that the current team lacks the passion and aggression to be successful.

“We need passionate and aggressive leaders rather than relying on prayers to win the matches. Nobody used to tell us before every ball to bowl like this or that. We can’t enjoy [cricket] with this slave attitude. It is really hard to get back on the right track in this manner,” said Javed.

Javed was also perplexed at the exclusion of all-rounder, Imad Wasim, from the limited-overs squad for the team’s tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Javed believes that Imad has been one of the best performers for Pakistan over the recent years and should have been a part of the squad. According to Javed, Imad should have been named the captain of Pakistan instead of Babar Azam in limited-overs formats.

Javed is currently the head coach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, Lahore Qalandars. After four dreadful seasons, he managed to take Lahore Qalandars to their first-ever PSL final in the previous season. Lahore was one of the in-form teams in the latest edition before the tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation.
