Over the last 5 years, the telecommunication industry has seen a remarkable growth rate and evolved impressively. With the advent of 4G services, Telcos have played a monumental role in bringing forth Pakistan into the digital era.
With more than 32 Million 4G subscribers in Pakistan, the demand for connectivity on the go is increasing exponentially.
As Pakistan moves towards becoming an increasingly connected country, it is imperative that telecom companies constantly innovate to provide the best digital services, higher speeds, and wider coverage to meet these evolving needs.
For optimal customer experience, the telecom companies have expedited the increasing availability and quality of 4G data across the country. An amalgamation of coverage, infrastructural capacity, speed, and customer care are the key parameters that define the benchmark for exemplary 4G services.
In general, the mobile operators appear to be keeping pace with the burgeoning demand for mobile data service. The newer generation of faster 4G service is quickly becoming commonplace in the lives of people.
According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in June 2019, the 4G customer base in the country has grown to 20% of the total mobile users.
During the past few years, telcos have their sights set on developing a sustainable 4G environment via consistent digital innovation. Going from strength to strength, the companies are expanding the networks to build a vast ecosystem to support the digital lifestyle of people of Pakistan.
Zong is carrying the lion’s share of the data traffic in Pakistan on its network while Jazz, Telenor, and Ufone follow suit respectively.
The spectrum through which 3G/4G internet services are provided is the back bone of any telecom operator. A spectrum is the superhighway for transporting data to customers.
Like any road, the greater the space it has, the more traffic it can carry. Currently, Jazz has the widest spectrum at 47.2 MHz. To evaluate this metric, we must look at the spectrum space available per subscriber, or alternately the number of subscribers per MHz of spectrum.
In that case, Zong has the widest space available per subscriber and least number of subscribers per MHz which is 1,0330,134, meaning that Zong subscribers enjoy the best 4G experience. Ufone has 1,209,436 subscribers per MHz, where Jazz has 1,265,554 subscriptions per MHz. And lastly, Telenor with its 1,546,194 subscribers per MHz, has the least space available per subscriber.
In a country where more than 60% of the population lives in rural areas, telecom companies need to expand their reach to villages and towns. Since pioneering 4G in Pakistan, Zong has continued to increase its 4G availability, with over 11,000 4G cell sites, spanning over more than 300 cities.
This is an astounding achievement, given the maturing dynamics of the telecommunication industry as other mobile operators are clearly lagging behind Zong. The infrastructural capacity of Zong indicates the company’s preparedness and vision to cater to the growing needs of the largest 4G subscriber base.
Technological prowess and infrastructural capabilities are the imperatives for a market leader committed to delivering unmatched customer experience.
Zong 4G has earned the reputation of being a responsible corporate entity whose fiscal pursuits are nothing short of enhancing the experience for its users through innovative endeavors but also for developing the digital ecosystem in Pakistan. The recent accolade of ‘Best in 4G Services’ from Consumers Association of Pakistan is a testament to Zong 4G’s leadership in the market and being the foremost preference of millions of Pakistanis.
Fiber optic based internet services are the next step in telecommunications. Telcos must take the initiative to bring these advanced internet services to Pakistani subscribers if they want to remain ahead.
Recently Zong has become the first Mobile operator to launch its Fiber to the home (FTTH) service in Karachi with an aim to expand it to other cities. Other operators should follow the lead of Zong in offering FTTH services if they want to remain relevant.
An upcoming topic of conversation in the telecom sphere is opening of 5G spectrum for testing by PTA. Each telecom company is operating under a different strategy to offer the best to its subscribers. With the world’s leading 5G operator China Mobile at its back, Zong is best positioned to take 5G leadership.
The time yet to come will unfold how telecom companies in Pakistan will fare, but one thing is for certain – innovation and timely infrastructure development will be the key to unlock the door for enhanced user experience and resultant emergence as being Pakistan’s No.1 Data Network.
