The government is considering reopening schools as COVID-19 cases have finally begun to show a downward trend for the first time in four months.
The Federal Education Minister, Shafqat Mahmood, revealed this on Monday, saying that if the plan goes through, schools will be reopened under the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Mahmood said that the government has sought suggestions from Madaris, and private school organizations of all provinces including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said that a meeting has been scheduled with the Ministry of Health in this regard and that any decision made will be based on NCOC data.
Through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Shafqat said, the education ministry is also in consultation with countries who have opened schools under various SOPs.
We are also in contact with the UNICEF on the policy of the government. We want to end the uncertainty on the basic important issue like education.

The minister quoted Gallup Survey to maintain that around 70% of parents are ready to send their children to school under the SOPs. He also hinted at addressing a press conference to take parents into confidence after the completion of a roadmap.
Earlier, the federal government had decided that the educational institutes in the country will not reopen before August 2020. Now, the health experts are backing the idea of the phase-wise reopening of schools late in August, after the end of coronavirus peak in the country.
