Netflix has developed a new plan to gain subscribers in India by making its service incredibly inexpensive. The company is rolling out a lower-priced mobile tier for a monthly fee of Rs. 199 ($2.8).
It is worth pointing out that this subscription model limits service usage to one mobile device (and one concurrent stream) and is only for standard definition viewing (~480p). Although, consumers can use this new plan on their tablets, various features such as the ability to cast (or mirror) the content to TV are restricted.
Earlier last week, Netflix said that it was hoping to launch a mobile-only subscription in India by Q3 this year but it will be rolled out today. Netflix’s regular plans that start at Rs. 499 and go up to Rs. 799 will still be offered in the country.
Netflix plans to launch this service in other markets in the Asian region, as evidenced by the fact that it tested this mobile-based subscription model in Malaysia before rolling it out in India. Chances are we will see it in Pakistan too.
Netflix payments were recently banned by Meezan Bank and some other banks including UBL in Pakistan. They cited security issues related to international payments for the ban. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved before the mobile-only plan rolls out in Pakistan.
