After launching Switch Lite last week, Nintendo has now unveiled an updated version of the standard Switch model, with promises improved battery life.

What’s New?

The new model boasts a battery life of 4.5 to 9 hours, depending on use, which is a big jump from the 2.5 to 6.5-hour rating on the original.

This improvement comes from an updated SoC used in the console. Codenamed Mariko, it’s a variation of the Nvidia Tegra X1 chipset used in the original Switch and is assumed to be a 16nm refresh from the original 20nm.

Another change that helped reduce power consumption is the change in NAND flash memory, which is said to be more efficient. Both these changes were detailed in an FCC filing from last week.

Nintendo’s official Switch comparison page lists the models with improved battery life as model number HAC-001(-01), with the bracketed addition distinguishing it from the original. Also, the new models feature packaging that is more prominently red but apart from that, there’s no other noticeable difference.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to check for serial numbers starting with XKW to make sure you get the model with the best battery life.

The new Switch should arrive somewhere in the middle of August. The price remains identical to the original model at $300.
