Ministry of Energy’s Power Division has informed the Senate that it’s working on upgrading the power transmission system of the country and significant improvement will be seen by next year.
Secretary Power Division Irfan Ali made these remarks while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Power.
Irfan Ali said that this year, the department added 3000 MW to the transmission system, taking its total capacity to 23000 MW. He said that the government will further enhance the capacity by another 3000 MW to touch the 26000 MW mark by next summer.
The committee, headed by Senator Fida Muhammad, also discussed overbilling and unscheduled load-shedding in Karachi.
K-Electric’s representative gave an ‘all good’ report to the parliamentary panel. He said that the electric supply company had 29 business centers across the city and was also reachable via widespread customer complaint call centers.
He informed the committee that the company has removed a large number of illegal connections and has installed Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC) in most parts of the city to curb the electricity theft. He said that the ABC wire cannot be hooked and reduces electricity theft significantly.
Responding to the overbilling query, he said that the billing was done according to NEPRA guidelines. He said their system had a reliable checking mechanism, adding that the complaints from NEPRA and customers have decreased over time.
To this, Secretary Power Division told the Senate body that other power distributors are slowly shifting to ABC transformers as well.
The committee suggested that ABC wires and transformers should be installed across the country, especially in high loss areas, to eliminate power theft.
