The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the provincial government to change the names of buildings, roads, parks, educational, and health facilities that are named after influential, feudal, and political personalities.
The Hyderabad circuit bench has given the Sindh government a two-month deadline to complete the task. The high court has issued these orders after hearing a petition filed by advocate Sajjad Ahmed Chandio, president of Awami Tehreek.
The petitioner argued before the court that hundreds of institutions, roads, parks, and other local and provincial government structures bear names of politicians and their family members.
“The ruling class has started the practice of naming public places after their names and those of their family members,” said Chandio while giving references of how public places are names in the developed world. He emphasized that the government does not follow any standard procedure in this regard.
“Sudden changes in the names of roads, streets and other places also deprive people of a sense of history,” said the petitioner while maintaining that the high court’s order of September 11, 2017, in the same petition has not been implemented till date.
In 2017, the SHC had ordered the Sindh government to follow the relevant law of Punjab province. “The criterion as referred in Punjab Local Councils’ Rules, 1981, shall be followed and no street, road, college or institute shall be named after persons who have not contributed for the welfare of society in any field,” ordered the high court.
