The provincial government has issued construction orders for a new gas pipeline adjacent to the Nullah Lai stream. The new entry to the supply grid would help put an end to the gas shortage issue that has continued to persist almost every winter season.

Federal Parliamentary Secretary, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, met with General Manager SNGPL for discussing impromptu adjustments to the national supply grid.

As per reports, the gas utility’s GM informed Shafiq that the company had received approval for laying a new gas pipeline that will run a full 45-km stretch from Rawat junction to the IJP Road.

The GM suggested the pipeline will tread through Soan Bridge adjacent to Nullah Lai. Most of the groundwork for the construction of the pipeline has been panned out along the service road attached to the Expressway.

Sheikh Rashid Shafiq stated that the new gas pipeline project is expected to be completed in two years. The team assigned for construction is currently preparing a detailed feasibility report, he added.

Commercial Development

In terms of development alongside the Expressway, the federal secretary mentioned that the construction of six to eight floored commercial buildings, plazas, and towers has been approved as per provincial regulations and strict adherence to SOPs.

Resorting to the government’s standpoint regarding this project, Shafiq suggested that when completed, these high-rise buildings will create thousands of jobs, increase property prices, and benefit the poorer citizens living on the banks of the water channel, all the while converting the area into a commercial hub.

In other news, people living in the area have objected to the new construction plans, complaining that while the government has commenced proceedings to mark the land, it has yet to compensate them for it.

According to an official mandate for the project, Jhanda Chichi, Dhoke Chiragh Din, Gawalmandi, Mohan Pura, Ratta Amral, Dhoke Hassu, Dhoke Dalal, Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Fauji Colony, and Bangash Colony fall along the pre-determined route for the Expressway.

As per reports, the residents have demanded market-competitive payments for their properties before an official handover.

As of 9th January 2021, the Rawalpindi administration has banned non-government construction along the Nullah Lai since the land is under acquisition for the highly anticipated Ring Road project. Firms, including the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), NEPAK, and Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (RMC), are spearheading the land allocation activity.

First launched under the then Railway Minister, Sheikh Rasheed, in 2003, the project remained dormant for over 13 years. With the 2018 elections appointing a government that strives for infrastructural development, the project along the Nullah stream has gained momentous traction ever since.
