Samsung has unveiled its latest and greatest 50MP sensor called the ISOCELL GN2 which is a follow-up to last year’s GN1. The new GN2 sensor features bigger pixels, better power consumption, and the Dual Pixel Pro technology for better PDAF.
The ISOCELL GN2 sensor is sized at 1/1.12″, which is the biggest in a smartphone as of yet. This sensor has 1.4μm-sized pixels for “exceptionally detailed photographs in regular settings”. Low light images are handled with the familiar pixel binning technology that simulates a larger 2.8μm pixel.
This sensor is also capable of taking 100MP photos through an AI algorithm. It does so by re-arranging the color pixels using “an intelligent re-mosaic algorithm”. As a result, there are three 50 MP layers in Green, Blue, and Red, which are overlaid, upscaled, and merged to produce a 100MP photo.
Additionally, this sensor is Samsung’s first to bring the Dual Pixel Pro technology that aims to improve autofocus. Instead of splitting all the red, green, and blue pixels vertically like before, the new sensor splits them diagonally so it is able to read phase differences at the top and bottom as well as the left and right.
The result is faster and more accurate autofocus even in low light conditions and with fast-moving objects. Other features of this sensor include taking instant HDR photos with fewer artifacts and recording 1080p videos at 480 FPS and 4K videos at 120 FPS. The 50MP ISOCELL GN2 is already in mass production and should be coming to smartphones soon.
