Samsung’s first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, introduced a new form factor for smartphones.

The phone opens into a tablet-sized display and folds into a thick bar with a secondary display on the outside. Although the Fold failed at launch due to design mishaps, it seems that the company is far from done experimenting with new designs for foldable phones.

A patent published earlier this month by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) shows that Samsung is working on a 6.7″ foldable phone that folds over from top to bottom, similar to the Motorola Razr.

Thanks to folks over at LetsGoDigital, we have a set of mock-up renders that show what the design of this foldable phone might look like.

The device folds outwards like the Huawei Mate X, allowing parts of the display to function still when its folded. The extra-wide hinge allows the device to bend to different lengths. You can fold the device to make both ends meet equally, or one side to stick out a bit more than the other.

While its folded, the phone can still perform tasks such as changing music tracks, taking selfies or checking the notifications.

The current Galaxy Fold focuses more on providing screen real estate. This one, on the other hand, can fold into a compact clamshell to allow for more portability instead.

This new design is indeed clever, as it allows for more portability and functionality. The concept is certainly exciting, but don’t forget that it is only a patent and the phone may never see the light of day.
