Today, at the Made by Google event, the company has finally launched the 4th Generation of Pixel smartphones. If we talk about the previous Pixel phones, the only features that stood out were the software, fast updates, and the night sight camera.
The hardware specifications were never too glamorous but that is about to change since the Google Pixel 4 duo features multiple cameras, radar-based gesture controls and plenty of other surprises.
As far as the previous Google Pixel smartphones are concerned, they have always featured a two-tone color scheme. Along with other things, Google Pixel 4 has also ditched the two-tone contrast and have moved to a classier one-tone look. The fingerprint sensor is housed under the display and the dual-sensor rear camera sits on an iPhone 11-like square bump on the top left corner.
Google’s signature ‘different colored power button to the main body’ makes its way to the Pixel 4 Duo as well. It is one of the few things that were not changed. The smartphones are available in black, blue and orange options.
At the front, the smartphones feature a thick forehead bezel to make space for the Soli Radar sensor. The Google Pixel 4 features a 5.7-inch P-OLED display with 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 aspect ratio, Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection, covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and a 90 Hz refresh rate.
Google Pixel 4XL, on the other hand, features a 6.3-inch P-OLED display with 1440 x 3040 pixels, 19:9 aspect ratio, along with the same 90Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 6.
Both smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB or 128 GB of onboard storage in the case of Google Pixel 4 and 6 GB or 8 GB RAM and 64 GB or 128 GB built-in storage in Google Pixel 4XL. Unfortunately, neither offers memory expansion via microSD cards.
One of the most prized features of the duo is the Soli Radar Chip that provides secure Facial unlock technology as well as motion controls. The Pixel 4 duo will have its own set of compatible applications that can be controlled by hand gestures, for example, changing the music track by waving in front of the sensor, declining a call with a swipe, etc.
Active Edge controls are back from the previous Pixel phones, which lets you squeeze the phone for specific actions or shortcuts.
As always, the new Pixel phones will run on the latest Android version, Android 10 in this case, with none of the extra apps or customization options that other manufacturers offer.
As mentioned earlier, the dual-sensor rear camera is housed in a square bump positioned at the top left of the device. The main sensor is a 12.2 MP dual pixel PDAF camera and the secondary sensor is a 16 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.
The main focus on the photography side of things is never the hardware, it’s always the processing and the Pixel Neural Core that works its magic with the photos. The upgraded night sight feature on the camera app now lets you take impressive timelapse shots with 16s exposures.
It also shows you HDR+ in real-time before you take a photo, letting you see exactly what the HDR is improving. You can also manually adjust the shadows and highlights thanks to Dual Exposure Controls.
For selfies and facial recognition, the two phones coms with a dual-sensor front camera featuring an 8 MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.0 aperture and a TOF 3D sensor.
Google Pixel 4 is fueled by a 2800 mAh battery while the Pixel 4XL comes with a 3700 mAh battery with 18@ USB Power Delivery 2.0 fast charging and QI wireless charging.
The smaller Pixel 4 will start at $800 for the 64GB model ($900 for 128GB) while the Pixel 4XL 64GB will set you back $900 ($1000 for the 128GB model). The phone will start shipping from 21st October in Canada and 22nd October in the US.
