In the event of a total collapse of the world, due to World War 3, global warming or due to a natural disaster, access to technology is going to be a major factor for your survival.

In a post-apocalyptic world, be it a nuclear wasteland, remnants of a virus outbreak – anyone with access to the old world technology is going to have the upper hand.

In those times, we are going to need a system that can be designed from scavenged parts and can produce complex electronics such as microcontrollers.

This is where Collapse OS comes in.

Collapse OS is a new open-source operating system being built specifically for humanity’s darkest times. This OS can be built without any external sources (i.e internet) on a machine built from scavenged parts with low-tech tools.

It is essentially a Z80 kernel and a collection of programs, tools, and documentation that allows you to assemble an OS that can:

  • Run on minimal and improvised machines.
  • Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, display).
  • Edit text files.
  • Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPUs.
  • Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
  • Replicate itself.

The creator of Collapse OS, software developer Virgil Dupras says,

I think I could finish it by myself, but I thought it would be more fun to do with a couple of other developers. Participation requires a very specific set of inclinations (believing in collapse) and skills (electronics and z80 assembly). I think that very few people fitting those requirements exist. But if they do, I’d like to find them.

It’s a bit like a pet project and not exactly an attempt at a serious solution. If you’re interested, you can check it out at https://collapseos.org.
