In a recent development, a video of a race-tuned Toyota GR Supra made waves across the internet as it drifted around on the skid-pad with no one behind the wheel except for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) software.
As per an article by UK’s CAR magazine, Toyota has joined forces with Stanford University in the USA to conceive a Toyota Supra that drifts on its own, using AI. Reportedly, the said project aims to develop advanced driver assistance features.
The self-drifting Supra prototype has been jointly developed by Stanford University and Toyota’s Research Institute (TRI). The former is also known for developing the self-drifting Delorean DMC-12 back in 2019.
The article also adds that Toyota Racing Department (TRD) also had a hand in developing the self-drifting Supra. However, they did not share any technical details regarding their help to the TRI and Stanford University.

The AI-tech employed in the Supra replicates the driving mannerisms of a professional drifter and uses them to drift the car and perform advanced driving maneuvers. The developers say that these learned behaviors shall later be incorporated in all of Toyota’s self-driving tech, which would help the cars avoid crashes by themselves if and when the need arises.
Commenting on the said development, a representative of the TRI stated,
Through this project, TRI will learn from some of the most skilled drivers in the world to develop sophisticated control algorithms that amplify human driving abilities and keep people safe.
The perfection of self-driving tech seems to be the pinnacle of automotive technology that every automaker wishes to achieve. And with its latest efforts, Toyota seems to be getting to that point in a hurry. Whether or not it will be the first to achieve self-drive perfection remains to be seen.
