USB Implementers Forum just released the technical specifications of USB4 which was announced in March this year. The new technology is nothing but good news for the consumers.
The USB4 will, as expected, be faster, compared to USB 3.2 it will have double the data transfer rate and will bring better compatibility options to the table. USB4 promises faster cable connections by making them more useful and easier to use.
The three basic and most prominent improvements we will see in USB4 over the USB 3.2 are:
The concept of using a single cable for power, data transfer and video signals came into being with USB 3 (3.1 and 3.2). However, depending on the configuration and the way the system is set up, users are mostly able to send only one type of signal, that too, with reduced speeds. On the other hand, USB4 does the data splitting much better, for example, if the user has a monitor that has 8 Gbps for its video bandwidth, the remaining 32 Gbps will be available for other signals (total bandwidth offered by USB4 is 40 Gbps).
Intel’s proprietary implementation of USB 3 includes the thunderbolt 3 which can be found in products by companies that have licensed the technology or on Intel boards. However, this time Intel is providing the Thunderbolt 3 specifications for free, hence, anyone who manufactures USB4 will be able to make it thunderbolt 3 compatible.
As mentioned above, when compared to USB 3.2 USB4 comes with twice the speed i.e. 40 Gbps. With every new USB technology, better speed is not that surprising, but USB4 topping 40 Gbps is a big leap ahead.
The specifications for this new technology will soon make their way to manufacturers, engineers, and designers. So we can expect to see the first USB4 products sometime around the mid of 2020.
