Pakistan Customs Port Qasim Collectorate has registered separate cases against eight parties, including importers and customs clearing agents, for the misappropriation of duty and taxes worth more than Rs. 330 million in customs clearance of “Spark Plug” consignments through misdeclaration.

As per a media report, a Port Qasim Collectorate official, Ashhad Jawad, issued the instructions to inspect the cleared consignments of Spark Plug on the spot.

Upon receiving the instructions, Deputy Collector Wasif Malik, Principal Appraiser Imran Gul, Appraising Officers Anwar Zeb and Zeeshan Danish, under the supervision of Additional Collector Ali Zaman Gardezi, inspected consignments from the data of the cleared consignments of spark plugs in the year 2019-20 of following importers: M/s Tabarak Traders, M/s Ali & Co., M/s Anwar & Brothers, M/s Hamza Trading, M/s Arsalan & Co., M/s Anas Agencies, and M/s Akram Autos.

The inspection revealed that the importers had used the name of a single importer, Jazz International, and cleared 17 consignments via a single clearing agent, which resulted in misdeclaration of the actual amount of taxes.

The said act of corruption caused a loss of Rs. 337.47 million to the national exchequer. The customs department has filed eight corruption cases against both the clearing agents and the importers for the said misdeclaration.
