The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested a student called Umar bin Khalid of the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, for his links with the banned outfit ISIS, also known as Daesh.

As per local media reports, CTD has booked the student on charges of terror-funding based on forensic evidence. The student is said to be linked with the global terrorist organization and used to fund its members and their families from different sources which could have been used in terror activities in Syria and Pakistan.

Umar bin Khalid was first arrested last month during a raid in which his gadgets, including two mobile phones and a laptop, were confiscated by the authorities. He was later released due to lack of evidence but the devices had been sent for forensic examination.

Meanwhile, his family had moved to the Sindh High Court (SHC) against his arrest, contending that he had been detained illegally without any charges, and demanded his release. The petitioner, who is the suspect’s mother, claimed that he has no connection with any political party.

After hearing the preliminary arguments, the high court issued notices to the Sindh Home Department, the Sindh Rangers Director-General, the Sindh IGP, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) SSP, the Crime Investigation Agency SSP, and other concerned authorities.

The department maintained that it had arrested the accused on 17 December 2020 after a tip-off but had later released him for lack of solid evidence to convict him.

However, after receiving the forensics report that confirms bin Khalid’s links with the ISIS, a manhunt has been re-launched to arrest him, a CTD official said.
