The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly has proposed legislation to prevent the cases of child abuse and to incorporate the death penalty for pedophiles.

On Friday, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Dr. Sumera Shams urged the assembly to introduce laws to curb the menace of child abuse and domestic violence in the province.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nighat Orakzai seconded Dr. Sumera’s views and proposed the formation of a special committee tasked with the deliberation and legislation on the issue.

Responding to queries, KP Law Minister Sultan Muhammad Khan said that the government had already introduced a domestic violence bill. He is constituting a committee for reviewing the draft bill.

Sultan was very clear on the matter. He believes that child abuse is a heinous crime and should be dealt with an iron hand to discourage the molesters. He then went on to propose a death penalty for pedophiles.

The law minister also emphasized the need for creating awareness among the school and madrassa students of what defines ‘child abuse.’

He underscored the role of parents in creating awareness among children about physical maltreatment.
