In March this year, Samsung started the mass production of 12GB LPDDR4X RAM modules but is now ready to take it to the next level. The Korean tech giant is starting mass production of the industry’s first 12-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR5 mobile DRAM.

The RAM will be optimized for 5G and AI features for smartphone use. Later on, Samsung will move to mass-producing 12-gigabyte (GB) LPDDR5 packages.

Gigabit vs Gigabyte

The above-mentioned terms might be Greek for many, so, for those who don’t know, a Gigabit is eight times smaller than a Gigabyte hence, eight 12Gb (Gigabit) LPDDR5 DRAM chips are stacked together to produce one 12 Gigabyte RAM module. Usually, the built-in storage and RAM we talk about is in Gigabytes.

12 GB RAM has been featured on recently launched flagships however, they are all the old LPDDR4X standard. The future premium phone will demand the best when it comes to efficient memory and fast performance. Thus, Samsung wants to be ahead of the curve in both supply and demand.

Speed Comparison

The new 12 Gb LPDDR5 DRAMs will have 1.3 times the data rate of LPDDR4X, 5,500 Mb/s vs 4266 Mb/s. The new faster 12 GB RAM package will be able to transfer 44GB of data in one second, that too, by consuming 30 percent less power.

Jung-bae Lee, the Executive Vice President of DRAM Product & Technology at Samsung, said:

With mass production of the 12Gb LPDDR5 built on Samsung’s latest second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) class process, we are thrilled to be supporting the timely launch of 5G flagship smartphones for our customers worldwide. Samsung remains committed to rapidly introducing next-generation mobile memory technologies that deliver greater performance and higher capacity, as we continue to aggressively drive the growth of the premium memory market.

We are hoping that apart from Samsung, other OEMs also use the newer faster RAM. However, at this point, it looks like Samsung’s upcoming stylus-toting flagship duo will be the first to incorporate this next-generation memory.

It is likely that, after mass production of 12Gb LPDDR5 at its Pyeongtaek base, Samsung will follow it up with a 16Gb LPDDR5 chip next year.
